Giving & Living
So I put out the challenge in Transit last Wednesday night: Track your “just for me, fun money” spending this week and then places to give matching amounts to people or places that actually need it. We are conspiring to make this advent season different - being more generous, worshiping fully and loving more - building relationships and memories instead of focusing on stuff for ourselves.
So how is it going? For those of you crazy {crazy = awesome} enough to try this little experiment - how are you adjusting your spending? What are you giving towards?
If you want to jump in on this little party, here is the card we are using: Giving & Living card

Southern Fried Worship
Southern Fried Worship
Ever had a story that changed your way of thinking, a philosopher that changed your perspective, or an experience that slapped your emotions so hard that you never forgot. Well that has happened to me a lot, and sometimes I think in those experiences I would have learned more if I had actually gotten slapped. Any who; one that I will never forget was just a year ago. Me, my mom, and my dad went to my aunt’s house for the weekend to get away and use up some vacation. So we left on a Thursday afternoon and decided to stay till Sunday night. My dad being a man that can sing very well was asked by my aunt to sing a special song during the offering at their church. So he agreed, and brought the necessary tracks to practice and decide which one would be best.
The only problem was dad was having problems with his voice the weak before and as just getting over a head cold. So naturally his voice was not up to its usual beautiful sound. My mom and my aunt had just come back from the store to bring us lunch. My uncle’s favorite Southern Fried Chicken! And man my uncle was in his prime. It was football season, the game was on in the living room, and he was sitting in his favorite chair, eating his favorite food.
Dad wanted everyone to hear his tracks and tell him which one they though would work better for the special. So we sat at the table and got our food and began to listen as dad began to sing with tracks he had practiced. The first one was ok, he sounded kind of rough honestly. But when he sang the next something began to change. My uncle, sitting in his favorite chair, watching his favorite sport on the TV, eating his favorite food; began to lift his hand. His eyes were closed and tears began to run down his face. He quietly said, “That’s for me Lord, that’s for me”. And there holding chicken in one hand began to worship.
Ill never forget that moment and the moment after. That even though the game was on, people were talking, and dads voice was struggling to hit the notes. My uncle heard the sound, the sound of worship, and began to listen. I was so consumed in all the other things that I myself missed it. I was deaf to worship.
Which makes stop and think how many times has the sound rang out, music play and I have been too consumed to stop and listen. Or how many times have we been in the mall and a Christian artist was playing over the speakers. And you know very well that song is referring to us and our relationship with God and yet we just pass it by instead of listening and enjoying the presence of His worship.
How many times has God has started that song for you. Knowing your needs your hurts. Knowing that worship is exactly what you need. All the while we pass the very thing He is trying to accomplish by meeting those needs and mending those hurts through worship.
How much of an impact would we have on other people if we were to start listening, start worshiping; when His sound is in our ears. How awesome would it be if the next time you went shopping for shoes you ended up with a buy one get one free and an encounter with God you will never forget. Yeah it will take a lot to over come people’s stares and comments but the presence of God will be more than enough. Now I know what your thinking “you want me to do what!? Everywhere I go!?”. You don’t have to start dancing or jumping down the clothes racks. I’m just asking you to listen, and maybe close your eyes. Forget about what is around you and just listen. And if you end up standing up with a hotdog in one hand and other raised high. With tears running down your face, in the middle of the county fair rite in front of the radio tent. Than man what an amazing testimony you will have.
Final question?
What if you were to take a body of people “Christians”, and put them in a room one at a time, turn down the lights. And tell them to act to the music as however they feel. The music would be of multiple styles and genres. Secular mostly and the last 2 worship. And film their reactions. What would be the outcome?
Click to comment and tell what you think would happen.

The Logic of the Empire
Last night we explored how to disengage from the “logic of the empire” and how we all need to have a passion for serving our King. We studied the cycle of God’s people as they are connected to God and then move away - only to need and sometimes be wise enough to beg for a rescue.
We began the night with this video, showing us how Star Wars might have ended:
Next week: “Undressed for Success” - how having it all together doesn’t guarantee success.
